The Student Success Endowment: Harry

Harry gave a speech at his graduation ceremony about the power of opportunity, he shares how the Student Success Endowment (SSE) funded music lessons which helped him to develop the confidence he relies upon while building a career as a barrister.

Hear what the SSE meant to barrister in training, Harry as a student at NTU

Now, thanks in part to the bursary, I can look to the future. I hope to successfully complete my Masters’ degree, before starting pupillage, the next formal step to qualification as a barrister in England and Wales.

Harry, Barristers Training Course LLM

My name is Harry, and I am currently studying the Barristers Training Course LLM at Nottingham Trent University, having completed my Law LLB as an undergraduate. In July, I attended my graduation ceremony, this was an unforgettable experience and a significant milestone in my academic journey. I delivered the vote of thanks speech before the graduating cohort, in which I reflected on the value of hard work, perseverance, and never turning down new opportunities and challenges.

I began to receive support from the SSE in 2023, and the knowledge that I qualified for this bursary encouraged me to use the money to receive instrumental lessons with NTU Music. At present, I have been playing the piano for around ten years. NTU’s arts program is wide-ranging and expansive, with a state-of-the-art Music Centre on City Campus. I was grateful for the opportunity to advance my skills further with a capable and talented teacher in a way that easily worked alongside my studies.

Reflecting on my experiences now, I would say that the benefits went further than my musical abilities. The bursary opened up new opportunities for me, helping to build up my confidence and facilitate my growth in a holistic sense.
Now, thanks in part to the bursary, I can look to the future. I hope to successfully complete my Masters’ degree, before starting pupillage, the next formal step to qualification as a barrister in England and Wales.
