You don't need to wait until Clearing opens to start thinking about what matters to you. Researching universities and courses now can help you make a more confident decision if you need to use Clearing.

What should you look for when comparing universities?

The more you compare now, the easier it will be to choose the right university when you're ready to apply. Try this approach to help you compare universities:

  • Pick 2–3 universities
  • Compare them on the points below – courses, entry requirements, ease of applying, accommodation, location, and support
  • Decide what matters most to you

These are a few key things to focus on:

1. Course availability

Start by exploring NTU’s courses to see what might be available and start to build a shortlist. Not all courses will be available in Clearing but once Clearing opens in July, you’ll be able to check the UCAS website for universities with available places. Many courses will appear from July onwards, but some won’t be added until the morning of A-level results day, so it’s worth keeping an eye on updates.

Look for:
  • Subjects you’re interested in
  • Flexible or related courses such as foundation degrees or integrated foundation year courses
  • Universities that offer your subject
Tip: Have a few options ready so you’re not relying on just one course – courses can fill up quickly during Clearing.

2. Entry requirements

Check the typical entry requirements and grades for each course.

Ask yourself:
  • Are these realistic for me to achieve?
  • Are there alternative routes, such as foundation degrees, integrated foundation year courses, or similar courses?
Some universities are more flexible than others — especially in Clearing. Entry requirements can also occasionally change during Clearing, depending on availability and demand.

3. How easy it is to apply

On results day, preparation and speed really matter. It’s a good idea to make a note of how to contact the universities you’re interested in ahead of time, so you’re ready to act quickly. Clearing applications are usually done by phone, but some universities also offer live chat, online forms or call back requests, so it’s worth knowing your options.

  • What student accommodation is still available at universities
  • Whether there is guaranteed accommodation for Clearing applicants
  • Location and travel options, including how close accommodation is to campus, and local transport.

5. Location and campus feel

Think about where you’ll be living and studying as it can have a big impact on your day-to-day experience at university.

If possible, try and visit campus before applying to get a real sense of the campus and surrounding area. If you can’t make it in person, you can still explore campus by taking a virtual tour or browsing online, to help you feel confident about your choice before you arrive.
