NTU’s new Olympic-grade hockey pitch sets the stage for future success
7 October 2024
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has solidified its place at the forefront of UK university sport with the completion of a state-of-the-art hockey pitch.
The newly installed facility marks a significant investment in the future of the NTU Hockey Club and promises to transform both the student experience and the university's standing in international sport.

The new ‘dry turf’ pitch is the same surface used at the Paris Olympics and the upcoming LA 2028 Olympic Games, aligning NTU with the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) vision of a more sustainable, environmentally friendly sport. Both the turf itself and the installation process are carbon-neutral, saving 73 tonnes of CO2 and a sizeable reduction in water consumption due to its lower irrigation needs compared to traditional pitches.
This installation makes NTU the first university in the UK to adopt this innovative technology, reflecting the university's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Enhancing Student Experience and Performance
The redevelopment goes far beyond a simple upgrade. The project includes new goals, a modern scoreboard, a video analysis camera mast, and a dedicated spectator area. The construction took five months to complete, finishing in time for the 2024/25 season, with students already benefiting from the world-class facility.
A Platform for International Recognition
With a World Hockey Accreditation, NTU is fostering stronger global connections and creating opportunities to host international matches. The club’s ambitions are soaring—targeting promotion into the national leagues of England Hockey, while continuing to strengthen their standing in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues. NTU Hockey has already made its mark on the national stage, securing 36 promotions, 25 league titles, and seven cup wins across 12 teams in the last five years. The club has also been home to 8 Olympians, with two competing in Paris 2024 this summer.
A Hub for Excellence and Growth
The transformative potential of this project is already being felt. NTU’s Head of Hockey, Jack Rhodes, is a former international player and European champion and leads a program that consistently delivers BUCS points, titles, and promotions. The club’s success and growing participation rate—now over 300 students—highlight the need for a world-class facility that matches their ambitions.
“The new pitch allows us to recruit a higher calibre of athletes, who are eager to play on one of the best surfaces in the country,” said Jack. “It also boosts our visibility, helping us build more international connections and attract sponsors who want to support a club that’s not just growing, but leading the way in innovation.”
NTU Hockey is aiming for 500 BUCS points and to solidify its position among the top-ranked university hockey programs in the UK. The newly completed pitch stands as a landmark moment in the history of both the club and the department.
The Future of NTU Hockey is Here
The NTU Hockey Club’s goals remain clear: continued success in BUCS competitions, promotion to national leagues, and cementing their place as a leader in university hockey. With the new facility already in full use for the 2024/25 season, the club is primed for even greater accomplishments, both on and off the field.
This investment in infrastructure will undoubtedly prove to be invaluable for the future of sport at NTU.
