Meet our Sport Scholars
Our athletes
We are pleased to introduce you to our Sport Scholars for the 2021/22 academic year. Our sports scholars compete across 15 different sports, representing NTU at both BUCS and external leagues or competitions. A number of our athletes also compete at a professional and / or international level.
Alexis Bower | Lacrosse
On the Athletic Honour Roll in 2018, 2019 and 2020, as well as MAAC All-Academic Team in 2020, Alexis is one of our highest achieving Lacrosse athletes. She previously competed in the NCAA Division 1 for Sienna College.
Alice Huddlestone | Hockey
Having come through the England Futures programme and now involved with GB on the Elite Develop Programme. Alice helped NTU win promotion to the BUCS Hockey National League in 2019/20.
Emily Lewis | Canoe
Current Team GB member and Olympic Games competitor, having competed and finished 18th at the Tokyo 2020 games. Emily also has numerous top 10 finishes at world and European events and is one of the highest achieving Sport Scholars currently studying at NTU.
Gianluca Bucci | Football
Starting out as an apprentice with Lincoln City FC, Luca now plays his professional football for Gainsborough Trinity FC. He was also named in the LFE '11' during his first year as an apprentice footballer.
Liam Bishop | Rugby Union
Selected to play for Ireland during the 2021 U20's Six Nations campaign and contracted to Nottingham RFC in the English Championship. Liam has won a BUCS Premier North league title, is a Trent College Alumni and involved in the Munster RFC pathway.
William Shirt | Lacrosse
Current England U21 and TASS athlete, Will is a former Fred Perry Young Sportsperson of the year for 2019 and a European Champion with the England U19's. He plays his club Lacrosse with home club Cheadle.
Camilla Tomlinson | Squash
A former World University Games Champion and World Top 20, Camilla plays on the Professional Squash
Jessica Haynes | Netball
Currently playing at Loughborough Lightning and part of the Vitality Superleague Champion side from 2020/21. Jessica has also been part of the England national pathway and London Pulse U21's in the NPL.
Joe Waterston | Hockey
EuroHockey Trophy Gold medallist in 2018, U21's European B Division Gold medallist in 2019 and a BUCS Gold.
Cira Fletcher | Swimming
An Olympic Trialist in the 2020/21 season in 4 events, Cira competes for NOVA Centurions and has made multiple national and BUCS finals.
Zoe Matthewman | Netball
A senior international player for Wales, Zoe gained her first caps in 2021 during the test series with the Isle of Man, as preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2022. She also competes for Loughborough Lightning U21's alongside NTU.
Charlie Brown | Swimming
Charlie is an athlete on the Team GB pathway for British Swimming. He is a multiple time international medallist, most notably with two silver medals and a bronze at the Canada, Ontario International meet. Charlie is also a multiple time BUCS and national finalist.
Kai Aichinger | Hockey
Playing for Germany at both U18's & U21's level, winning the European Championship twice and being an EHL champion. Kai is one of the highest achieving international athletes in the sport scholarship programme.
Ella Bowen | Netball
Ella competes for both England U21's and Loughborough Lightning, having made her England U17's debut in 2019 at the Netball Europe competition. She is also a TASS athlete with England Netball and NTU.
Connor Stuart | Swimming
Connor is a CPISRA World Games 2018 Gold, Silver and Bronze medallist. He holds multiple East Region Paraswimming S6 records and is currently part of the NOVA Centurions swimming programme, but also represents his home club of City of Cambridge.
Scott Hall | Rugby Union
Having begun his career in the Wasps Academy at Henley College, Scott is now contracted to Nottingham RFC as a professional player and has made his debut for Leicester Tigers this year in the Premiership Cup. He has played in the BUCS Super Rugby league and is a BUCS Premier North Champion.
Melissa Nealon | Hockey
Melissa is part of the USA Development programme, having competed for the University of Albany during her undergraduate years. She was names in the 2019 NFHCA All-Northeat Region First Team and is the 2019 America-East Scholar of the year.
Michael Moyosoreoluwa Adekeye | Basketball
Playing professionally for Hoods Basketball in the National Basketball Leagues, Division 1, Michael has also represented England at U16's level. In 2018/19 he also won the EABL League title with his home club Harrington Hawks.
Joe Browning | Rugby Union
Joe was part of the Leicester Tigers Academy for many years and is now part of the Senior squad. He has also represented England at U18's level.
Benjamin Carroll | Lacrosse
A two time state champion and named in three All-Star team selections at both undergraduate and senior level, Benjamin spent his undergraduate years studying at the University of Maine. He played as a scholar in their NCAA Division 1 Lacrosse programme, before making the move to the UK for postgraduate study with us at NTU.
