Here at the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (ADBE), we offer a range of study opportunities that are all very different in nature and location, but they will all greatly contribute to your personal and professional development.

Among the many reasons to choose to study abroad are:

  • enhance your CV
  • experience a different culture
  • add value to your degree
  • build your professional networks
  • broaden your horizons
  • differentiate yourself
  • have an adventure!

While studying abroad, you can take appropriate modules at your chosen exchange university and NTU will recognise them as associated credits and count them towards your degree.

Useful information to know about studying abroad

If you're studying on a sandwich course in the School of ADBE, you can opt to study abroad for a full academic year, or for a semester, during Year Three. This is an optional and additional period of study that complements your degree at NTU as an alternative to taking a work placement.

This is an exciting opportunity to experience a different national culture, teaching and learning styles and subjects in an international environment. The destination university must be a year abroad / exchange partner of NTU or member of a formally recognised scheme such as the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP).

Our NTU Global and student mobility team will support you in finding the right opportunity from one of the many international partners available around the world.

Successful completion of a period of international study will earn you a standalone award – an International Study Certificate (minimum six weeks) or the International Study Diploma (minimum 36 weeks).

European Project Semester (EPS) is a project-based study programme delivered and assessed in English, and is available to all undergraduate BA (Hons) Furniture and Product DesignBA (Hons) Product Design and BSc (Hons) Product Design students in their third (placement) year of study. It is crafted to address the design requirements of the degree and prepare students with the necessary skills to face the challenges of today’s global economy.

Instead of spending your entire third year doing a placement, you will have the option of doing half a year studying abroad, and the other half on placement.

The new Turing Scheme begins in September 2021. This replaces the UK’s participation in Erasmus+. Find out more about Turing Scheme grant rates.

The British Council will be providing more information on the Turing Scheme in due course. Keep an eye on our study exchange pages for updates.

We'll be holding information sessions and virtual drop-ins in spring 2021. Visit the Study Abroad channel on the Virtual Global Lounge for announcements.

NTU has access to over 300 member institutions around the world, and each course has different study abroad options. You can search our study exchange partners by course on our study exchange site.

Take a look at our NTU travel scholarships to see how you can apply for funding towards your international study, work or volunteering opportunities. We have scholarships and bursaries available to support with the additional expenditure incurred through travelling abroad as part of your time at NTU.

If you would prefer to remain in the UK for your degree but would still like to gain some international experience, you might be interested in spending a summer studying abroad or international volunteering opportunities, many of which take place during the summer months.

We will also support you in identifying work placement opportunities, either in the UK or abroad, that can help you diversify and internationalise your skills and experience.
