I’d always wanted to be in TV/Radio, but never knew there was a course for it, until I saw Broadcast Journalism at NTU.

More about Bradley

Bradley Jones graduated with a BA in Broadcast Journalism in 2019 and has since gone from an Output Research at Good Morning Britain to a Producer, Reporter and Assistant Programme Editor at 5 News. Bradley talks to us about why he studied at NTU, the biggest highlights and challenges of his career so far, and his plans for the future.

Why did you choose to study at NTU?

Studying at NTU was a bit of a fluke for me. I was at a different uni, studying a very different course and not really getting anything out of it, had mates who were at NTU and came for a night out. I loved it! Loved Nottingham and loved the campus – so had my heart then set on going there. I’d always wanted to be in TV/Radio, but never knew there was a course for it, until I saw Broadcast Journalism at NTU.

Why would you recommend NTU to prospective students?

I loved NTU, from the people I met on my course, in halls and on nights out. I had the best 3 years and wouldn’t change a thing.

What does your current day involve?

My current day as a Producer involves coming in for our 8.30 am editorial meeting, pitching stories and creative treatments and then being assigned to them for the day. I then work with a reporter to output this for our 5 pm programme presented by Dan Walker. This can include scripting, finding pictures, interviewing contributors, writing and commissioning graphics and liaising with the news desk on an array of tasks. I also act up as an Assistant Programme Editor, this means I manage a team of producers and script the whole programme with Dan. I also act up as a Reporter, pitching and outputting my own stories.

What attracted you to this field of work?

After the course at NTU, I knew I wanted to work in TV – I was lucky enough to get a researcher job at Good Morning Britain and have continued to work from there on.

What challenges have you faced?

I’ve faced many challenges. As a northern, working-class, gay man, getting into certain media spaces can be tricky and that ‘imposter’ feeling can come over you. It’s important to know you’ve worked just as hard as anybody else for your place at the table.

What have been the highlights and biggest challenges of your career so far?

My highlights would be working on the Queen’s death coverage at GMB – 10 days of non-stop shifts outputting the most important news to the nation. I also have worked on fab stories such as producing 5 News’ Eurovision coverage in Liverpool and working on lots of Entertainment and showbiz content including interviewing Joss Stone and her revealing that she’d secretly got married.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m not sure! I love working on lighter news, showbiz and features. So I’d imagine that I’d probably look to go down that route. Sometimes the daily news cycle can be tough and it’s important to have fun at work!

If you had a time machine, what would you go back and tell yourself at uni?

Chill, go on more nights out, and listen to Gail Mellors.
