The Student Success Endowment: Emmanuel

Broadcast Journalism student Emmanuel gained experience in radio and magazine journalism thanks to the support of the Student Success Endowment. He found new skills, confidence, and friendships through student publications and journalism societies.

The Student Success Endowment (SSE) gave me the support to join the university's student radio and magazine. These societies gave me a space to meet new people with similar interests, while also allowing me to develop skills that I could directly apply in my course.

Emmanuel. BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism

I am currently completing the last lap of my university journey, as I’m in the third year of my degree in Broadcast Journalism. I have always had a passion for journalism because of the power it holds to share real-world experiences and situations through storytelling. My interest in journalism started in college, where I studied Multimedia Journalism, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Therefore, I knew without a doubt that I was going to study a similar course in higher education.

When researching journalism courses, I noticed the NTU Broadcast Journalism course was accredited, meaning it meets industry standards and practices. Finding a course I'm very passionate about aligns with real-world working conventions made my university choice a very easy one. Studying this course at university has shed light on my job prospects after graduating. Particularly freelance journalism because it allows me to engage in range of spaces within the industry, whilst giving me the chance to further develop my skills.

A main obstacle I faced during my first year at NTU was not being able to really socialise and meet new people outside structured environments like my course. However, the funding provided by the Student Success Endowment (SSE) gave me the support to join the university's radio and magazine societies (Fly Live and The Platform) by assisting me to purchase the societies memberships. Joining these societies gave me a space to meet new people with similar interests, while also allowing me to develop skills that I could directly apply in my course.

Maintaining my fitness and overall physical wellbeing is very important to me, especially because it has a positive impact on my mental wellbeing too. That’s why in third year I decided to join the universities Muay Thai team. In addition to the physical benefits, I was also able to form some great friendships through being introduced to such an interesting combat sport that is rooted in a very rich culture based in Thailand.

To those supporting the Student Success Endowment, I would like to sincerely express how grateful I am. Through your great deal of kindness and generosity, I have been able to experience my university life to such a fulling extent. This funding has played such a real role in helping me develop my professional and personal skills, equipping me with valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences that will prove vital beyond my time at university.

I hope you know the SSE funding has a lasting impact, which I’m truly thankful for.
