FAQs about Clearing

We're here to answer your frequently asked questions about what Clearing is and how to apply through Clearing. We'll also share our advice and guidance on what to do if your university plans change.

How does Clearing work?

Clearing is a route for applicants who have received all their results to secure a place at a UK university for September 2025 entry, following the main UCAS application deadline of Monday 30 June 2025.

Applicants typically use Clearing if they:

  • Haven’t yet applied to university but want to start in September
  • Are applying for the first time after Monday 30 June 2025
  • Didn’t receive any offers from universities
  • Have changed their mind about their chosen course or university
  • Have declined their firm or insurance choice

Clearing runs from 5 July to 20 October each year.

UK A-level, IB (International Baccalaureate®) and BTEC results will be published on Thursday 14 August 2025 – often referred to as results day. Some BTEC results may be received in July.

SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) results day is Tuesday 5 August 2025.

Clearing opens on Saturday 5 July 2025 and closes on Monday 20 October 2025.

The busiest day for Clearing applications will be A-level results day on Thursday 14 August 2025. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible as places fill up fast.
