About this course
This BSc Event Production course, based in Nottingham, is for those wanting to forge an exciting career in the live event production industry.
You’ll work in a real-world live events venue, learning from our team of experts who are professionals in lighting design, live sound, broadcasting, live event planning, and live video installation and design, including LED video screen technology, and projection mapping pyrotechnics.
This is a heavily practical course, with a focus on gaining real-world experience, and underpinned by theory. You’ll learn about building lighting rigs and PA systems from day one as well as maintaining and repairing the equipment that you will be using on real world events.
Your tutors are all industry professionals still out there working in the industry whilst also being qualified lecturers – so you’re learning from people that live it! We set up cross-collaborations with other course disciplines such as Music Performance, Film Production, and Content Creation students.
You’ll learn about a broad range of disciplines in the live and technical events sector, including lighting design and operation, live sound reinforcement, sound theory and acoustics, electrical principles, equipment maintenance and repair, live video technology including LED video walls and projection mapping, pyrotechnics safety, live broadcast technology, emerging technologies in the industry and live event planning. Industry and work-related opportunities will be gained through live projects, guest lectures and short work placements.

An introduction to stage lighting for live events. it is one of the most fundamental technologies in use to enhance the audience experience and support the performance of live events. This module will introduce you to the application of a diverse range of technologies in use, and their underlying scientific principles. The Lighting Fundamentals module introduces you to the essential principles and practices of working with lighting systems in live event environments. You will explore the core components of lighting rigs, including fixture types, power and data distribution, and safe rigging techniques. Through hands-on sessions, you will learn how to hang and focus fixtures, patch DMX systems, and operate basic lighting setups using lighting consoles. The module focuses on building your confidence with lighting hardware and control systems, preparing you for more advanced operational work in future modules.

The Operations Passport module introduces you to the essential procedures and working practices needed to professionally deliver safe and sustainable events. You will explore the key responsibilities of event staff and learn how to work effectively as part of a team in live event environments.
You will study the importance of legal compliance and understand how legislation affects the way we work, learning about safe work practices, manual handling, and how to protect your own wellbeing and that of others while working on-site.
You will also develop your ability to prepare and manage key event documents, such as risk assessments, production plans, sustainability assessment and safety actions plans. Clear and effective communication will be a focus, helping you to share information confidently and work well with others under pressure.
The module will also explore professional attitudes and behaviours expected in the events industry. You will reflect on how to present yourself in a professional way and how to respond to challenges that may arise when working in a team.

In this module, you’ll take your live sound skills to the next level by focusing on the practical techniques and decision-making involved in delivering professional audio at live events.
You’ll learn how to select and position microphones appropriately for different sources and environments, and how to carry out effective sound checks to ensure clarity, balance, and reliability. You’ll explore audio processing tools, including EQ, compression, gating, and limiting and how to use them creatively and technically to shape sound in a live mix.
Working with multitrack playback and live musicians, you’ll develop your mixing skills in both front-of-house and monitor contexts. You’ll also refine your workflow, communication, and troubleshooting strategies to operate confidently under pressure.

Placement year routes
We have an option for all of our students to undertake a placement year and allow you to decide whether this is right for you once you have completed years 1 and 2 of your course. This time spent working in industry provides our students with crucial work experience, which is highly prized and much sought after by employers upon graduation. If you are successful in securing a placement you will have the chance to gain an additional Certificate or Diploma in Professional Practice, dependent on duration.
The additional placement year incurs a fee. For international students considering the transfer to the 4-yr SW route it's important to seek advice from the International Student Support team and the Home Office regarding any potential visa implications and costs. For UK students, advice should also be sought regarding SLC eligibility, if applicable.

Building on your previous experience, you will engage in deep, self-directed investigations into the tools, systems, and workflows that shape the future of production.
You may choose to explore advanced techniques such as time-coded lighting shows or surround sound system designs.
You’ll spend time looking into the areas of the industry that excite you and work towards a much deeper understanding of your specialist subject area.
The module also encourages hands-on experimentation with hardware and electronics, including PCB design and etching, Raspberry Pi programming, and soldering projects such as building a Fuzz Face guitar pedal.
There will be masterclasses and lectures that allow you to explore the use of lasers, pyrotechnics, and other high-impact effects—always with a focus on safety and professional standards.

With skills workshops, and hands-on experience, this is your chance to level up and prove what you can do within professional parameters.
By the end of the module you will have assets that could support your Future Pathways module outward facing portfolio for semester 2, and the skills can support your Capstone Project.

In this module you will apply what you have learnt throughout your course and start developing a Final Capstone Project. Working with your peers and lecturers, you will negotiate collaborative practice and individual achievement with the view of showcasing your work.
Depending on your course, these final capstone projects may be prescribed, collaborative or individual.
By the end of the module, you are expected to have arrived at an evidence-backed plan that can be implemented in Semester 2. You will have assessed any possible challenges and risks, including how collaboration and ethical considerations may affect your journey.
You will be submitting a project proposal for approval at the end of the module. In addition, you are expected to provide planning documentation and/or examples of work which will be negotiated with the course team when the assessment is set.

How you're taught
Teaching and learning will take place in custom-built live events production spaces and a range of bespoke IT suites and classrooms. You’ll learn on industry-standard equipment with training from experts in the field of live event technologies.
The aim is to develop your practical, technical and critical thinking skills and to work on the appropriate deployment of analysis and enquiry techniques associated with the live events industry, whilst working on a combination of controlled, in-house activities and real-world client projects.
Classes will be a mixture of technical lectures and practical workshops where you’ll explore the core scientific principles of the module subject areas. In addition to the theoretical underpinning of the subject area, the teaching and learning activities will predominantly focus on developing your practical skills associated with live event technology.
Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in Event Production
Our BSc Event Production degree at NTU takes you to the forefront of technology and creativity, exploring how Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the live events sector. You’ll investigate how AI can streamline production workflows, reduce waste, and improve accessibility—while critically assessing its ethical implications, from ownership of creative output to bias in algorithms and the impact on employment.
Through hands-on workshops and reflective assignments, you’ll engage with real-world challenges such as balancing automation with human creativity and advocating for responsible, sustainable practices. How you're assessed
The course offers a range of assessment methods. Through practical assessments, written reflections and reports, industry-recognised documentation and portfolio evidence, our aim to to offer authentic assessment to allow you to truly evidence your knowledge and skills in the most appropriate manner.
Contact hours
For each 20-credit module, you’ll spend about 200 hours learning overall. Around 40 of those hours will be taught in lectures or seminars. The rest of the time is for independent study, reading, research, or working on assignments.
