Please note: This course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, which is funded by the Government's Towns Fund. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support individuals and employees of businesses that are based in the towns of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The standard fee would normally be £295.

This course is designed to provide you with a hands-on, practical understanding of Business Intelligence (BI) using Microsoft Power BI, a leading tool in the field.

This short course will introduce you to how business intelligence technologies can support decision-making and how these technologies have had a profound impact on corporate strategy, performance, and competitiveness and broadly encompass decision support systems, business intelligence systems, and visual analytics.

This course is ideal for business professionals seeking to enhance their decision-making skills through data-driven insights, and equally important for analysts, managers, and executives who want to harness the full potential of Power BI for business intelligence.

It’s also ideal for IT professionals and data enthusiasts interested in expanding their knowledge of BI tools.

What you’ll study

During this course you will:

Learning a programming language is meaningless without putting it to use; programming language will be included as part of this course to perform real-life Business Intelligence tasks.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll study during the course.

Introduction to Data and Data Science
This is to provide an overview of data and data science and how it relates to this Business Intelligence short course.

Statistics and Excel
This introduces working with data, and statistics and extends to the understanding of statistical testing aimed at building a solid foundation on critical thinking abilities.

Database Theory and SQL
The underlying database theory to acquire an understanding of why databases are created and how they can help manage data.   SQL allows to dig deeper into the data to obtain the answers to questions that might improve the way a company does its business. Key areas to be covered include theory of relational database and SQL queries.

PowerBIPowerBI is one of the finest tools available for making effective charts and dashboards. Almost all large companies use such tools to enhance their BI capabilities.

Tutor profile: Dr Isibor Kennedy Ihianle

Dr Isibor Kennedy Ihianle is a Lecturer at the Department of Computing and Technology at Nottingham Trent University.

He is also a Fellow Higher Education Academy and a Member of the British Computing Society.

Dr Ihianle previously was a Computer Science lecturer at the Cambridge Regional College where he led modules in Software Engineering, Object Oriented Programming, Database Design and Development amongst many others.

He was also a lecturer at the British Institute of Technology and E Commerce where he led modules like machine learning techniques, Internet Science and Data Analytics on the Staffordshire University validated program.

Entry requirements

You must be familiar with understanding business operations for your company and have basic computer literacy; understanding file management and comfortable navigating through software interfaces.

You should bring along your own business data to use during the course and your own laptop.

You must be over the age of 18 in order to attend this course.
