Introduction:

Taught at NTU in Mansfield, we are providing access to alternative routes in higher education. We've built qualifications with the local job market in mind. Each of our higher education courses is relevant, hands-on and work focused.

To maintain competitiveness in the current challenging environment, companies need effective leaders who understand both technology and business. Engineers with management training have opportunities to make valuable and lasting contributions. Therefore, there is an increasing global demand for specialists in engineering management, supply chain, continuous improvement techniques and sustainable development in both mechanical and manufacturing industry sectors.

Your engineering knowledge will be taken to the next level as you learn about the appropriate quantitative engineering tools for the analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of manufacturing engineering systems, processes and products. Alongside the technical engineering aspects and theory we'll develop your confidence with communication and team working skills which are essential in any management role.

You'll develop your business skills to deal with complex technical issues systematically. We teach you this in the current global economic, social and environmental context of industrial technology within the engineering sector.

As the level of automation in the Mansfield and Ashfield region grows, this course will align and work with the local industry to fulfil local demands and future-proof the workforce.

  • You'll study at our NTU in Mansfield University Hub, where you'll have access to fantastic buildings, and all of the tools and technology you need for studying on this course.

What you’ll study

The course balances the underpinning academic concepts, practical work, techniques and engineering management principles - all necessary for a successful career in engineering management. To develop your engineering skills you'll be applying your skills to real-world situations and problems, making you think and work like a professional engineer.

The modules will focus on relating theory to current engineering topics and issues. You'll explore developing and future technologies so you'll be at the forefront of what's happening in industry.

Advanced Operations Management

Learn the theory and techniques to manage operations and improve business performance, including improvement philosophy, which addresses problems of transformation, change and redesign in organisations.

Ethics, Environment and Innovation

During this module you'll apply the theories and concepts used by organisations to help them manage the innovation process for new technologies, products and processes, as well as exploring the ethical and environmental standards that both organisations and engineers must comply with.

Further Lean and Six Sigma Techniques

Understand the range of Lean tools required for process change and to reduce and eliminate waste. The two underpinning lean tools of Six Sigma and DMAIC will be examined to allow for their process roles, key features, and common issues to be discussed and understood.

System Modelling and Simulation and Project Management

You'll study the basic principles of computer simulation and its applications within the manufacturing industry.  Learn to use an industry leading discrete-event simulation package (e.g. SIMIO) to model development life-cycles, where you'll get experience of data collection and analysis.  This module also includes aspects of project management applied to change management implementation, engineering projects, government projects and IT based projects.

Individual Engineering Project

This industrial or research project will bring together the knowledge, understanding and skills developed during your course. You'll investigate an engineering problem, implement solutions, critically evaluate and reflect on your work, and develop your abilities to communicate, self-organise and manage. You will also present your completed Professional Portfolio.

How you’re taught

The course is predominantly coursework-based with some practical assessments and class tests. Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to undertake self-directed independent study. This will include preparing for seminars, researching, completing coursework, and directed reading to expand your knowledge.

Seminars and lab sessions

You'll have seminars and lab sessions, where you'll apply theory learned to real-world situations. These sessions involve active learning and are driven by collaboration with your tutors and classmates. Due to the smaller class sizes, this approach enables individualised support to ensure you reach your learning potential.

Careers and employability

This course focuses on specialist technical skills and knowledge and provides you with a clear set of skills and goals for entering employment. This course is ideal if you are planning to work within management of the mechanical and manufacturing sectors.

Employability team

Our expert Employability team will work closely with you at every stage of your career planning, providing personal support and advice. You can benefit from this service at any time during your studies and for up to three years after completing your course.

NTU Enterprise

You'll also have the opportunity to turn your ideas into a viable business with help from NTU Enterprise, NTU's purpose-built Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise, a support centre to help students create, develop and grow their own businesses.
