More about Jeba

What made you choose to study at NTU?

I chose to study the MRes in Medical Imaging at NTU because of its strong research focus and the opportunity to work with advanced imaging technologies. Having completed the clinical side of medical imaging in my bachelor’s degree, I wanted to deepen my understanding of medical imaging physics and pursue a research-focused career. The course structure provided a balance between theoretical knowledge and hands-on research

What was the highlight of your course?

The highlight of my course was my exchange research experience in FYLA, Spain. I had the opportunity to work on an exciting project focused on fibre optic technology for biomedical imaging, which took me to Spain for two months. This was an incredible opportunity that not only allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting but also exposed me to new industrial practices, something very different from lab-based work at university. I gained invaluable hands-on experience, including building fibre lasers. The chance to work in a multicultural environment, experience life in Valencia, and make lifelong friendships was also a highlight. The experience helped me grow both professionally and personally, and I’ll always cherish the memories of my time in Spain—from the lab sessions to the beach parties and basketball games. It was truly an unforgettable part of my academic journey.

Did you do any voluntary work alongside your studying?

Yes, alongside my studies, I worked as a carer, which was a natural extension of my background in healthcare. I found the experience very rewarding, as it allowed me to directly support individuals with their personal care and well-being. This role helped me develop important skills such as empathy, patience, and communication, which have been invaluable in both my studies and my professional life. It was a fulfilling way to contribute to the community while also balancing the demands of my academic work.

What have you been doing since graduation?

Since finishing my MRes in Medical Imaging, I’ve been working as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Royal Sussex County Hospital. My job mainly revolves around PET-CT imaging, which is as high-tech as it sounds. I’m responsible for performing imaging, giving out radiopharmaceuticals (don’t worry, it’s safe!), and managing patient doses while ensuring we’re all sticking to the right safety protocols. I also keep an eye on the quality of our PET-CT equipment and work with different teams to keep everything running smoothly. It's a role where no two days are the same, and I get to problem-solve on the go, which keeps it interesting!

Did the MRes in Medical Imaging help you develop skills for your chosen career?

The MRes in Medical Imaging gave me a strong grounding in the physics of imaging technologies, which has been really useful in my role as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

What advice would you give to others?

My advice would be to stay curious and be open to learning, even if it feels a bit out of your comfort zone. I’m from a small place in Kerala, India, and I never thought I’d end up working abroad or diving into something as technical as medical imaging. But looking back, the experiences—like working in Spain—really helped me grow. It can be a bit scary, but stepping outside your usual environment opens up so many opportunities. Focus on building your knowledge, but also don’t be afraid to take on new experiences, whether it’s a project or an internship. Keep adapting along the way—sometimes the journey to your goals isn’t a straight line, but it’s all part of the process. As we say in Kerala, 'Olladh kond Onam pole'—whatever you’ve got, turn it into a festival!
