About this course
Our MSc in Sport Management course brings together teaching, research, and consultancy to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to lead and manage global sport projects and pursue a career in the sport management industry.
This course will allow you to gain a critical understanding of essential current topics including sport ecology, sales, and sports law. The course is supported by specialised facilities and resources which you will have access to, including virtual reality technologies. You will have the opportunity to engage with sport management professionals at local organisations such as Nottingham Forest Football Club, Nottingham Wildcats Basketball Club, and the National Ice Centre. The course employs a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods, which ensures that you can develop comprehensive practice and an extensive portfolio along with many essential transferable skills.
The course is delivered by friendly and approachable student-centred staff who facilitate a supportive, interactive, and nurturing learning environment that will help you excel and achieve your academic goals.
Placement
There is an opportunity for a year-long placement, which is undertaken after the completion of the core modules. Upon completion of the placement, students will receive a Postgraduate Placement Diploma in Professional Practice.

What you’ll study
You will study seven modules across areas including sustainability management, commercialisation of sport, sport law and leadership in sport alongside an extensive research project. Additionally, all students will have the opportunity to attend an Academic Language Skills programme.
Managing Sport Ecology and Sustainability Approaches (20 credit points)
Now more than ever before the climate crisis is affecting local, national and international sport industries. This module examines the relationship between climate change and environmental uncertainty and sport. You will study theoretical approaches and practical applications of sport ecology to provide solutions to drive more effective climate responses for sport organisations. NTU has been classed as one of the greenest universities in the UK for the past eight years and has also been ranked amongst the world's most sustainable universities.
Sales and Commercialisation of Sport (20 cp)
Understand advanced sales techniques and assess the commercial strategies that sport organisations and teams use to achieve new business and promotional opportunities. You will track the development of sport organisations and teams as ‘brands’ and what this means for the future state of sports commercialisation.
Sport Business and Law: Global Issues and Challenges (20 cp)
Explore the key concepts and theories of international business and law in a sporting context. You will learn about the role and impacts linked to corruption, doping and anti-doping and event regulation in sport.
Advanced Leadership and Communication Practice (20 cp)
Enhance your knowledge of the latest leadership and communication techniques in response to contemporary issues faced by sport businesses globally. This module examines the role of the sport media and how diversity in sport leadership can affect leadership and communication.
Applied Skills for Research and Data Analysis (20 cp)
Gain a deep understanding of data analytics and market research techniques used in the sport industry to drive decision making. You will focus on the theory and evolution of data analytics and technologies in sport, and how these developments have informed how data is applied in sport business.
Professional Development and Impact in Sport Management (20 cp)
Develop your professional skills and learning experiences to further your career in the sport management industry. You will apply employability frameworks to support your continued professional development within your chosen professional sporting context.
Research Project (60 cp)
Your research project is an independent piece of work, supervised and supported by a dedicated member of staff. Building on the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course you will undertake a novel research project and produce an original research paper for a target journal.

Careers and employability
Graduates of the MSc Sport Management will be well placed to work in many sport management areas including sport associations, professional sport bodies, sport marketing agencies, sport hospitality providers, policymakers, non-governmental sport organisations, professional sport teams and elite sport organisations.
The range of career and employability opportunities and experiences will be enriched by the diversity of students enrolled on the course. We will guide you on how to engage with opportunities across the wider university, as well as encouraging a welcoming community feel through course representatives, and enrichment week activities alongside other student support groups.
This course can provide a platform for students who want to gain further experience and relevant qualifications before committing to a research degree (i.e. PhD).

Campus and facilities
You’ll mainly be studying in the Erasmus Darwin and CELS Buildings with access to facilities including an environmental chamber, biomechanics lab, and nutrition suite.
Our self-contained, community-focused Clifton Campus has been designed to keep students busy between lectures. Catch-up with your course mates in the Pavilion’s barista café and Refectory; brainstorm group presentations in chic and stylish study spaces; enjoy some proper R&R in The Point, home of our Students’ Union. The campus also hosts the multimillion-pound Clifton Sports Hub, offering great options for everyone — whatever your interests, and however competitive you’d like to get!
Take a few steps off campus and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Nottingham — one of Britain’s top 10 student cities, and one of Europe’s top 25. As well as offering a great social scene, it’s one of the UK’s key sporting hubs, home to the iconic Trent Bridge Cricket Ground; Notts County (the world’s oldest professional football league club) and two-time European Cup-winners Nottingham Forest; the Nottingham Tennis Centre, the National Ice Centre, and the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont; plus rugby union, rugby league, hockey and ice hockey teams.

UK students
- Honours degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) in a sport or management related subject. Applicants with a 2.2 honours degree will be considered on an individual basis.
- Applicants with relevant employment experience or other relevant qualifications will also be considered.
