NTU Hockey - A season of fundraising, engagement, and competitive success

17 March 2025

The 2024/25 season has been full of successes so far for our NTU Hockey clubs. The unveiling of the Olympic-standard hockey pitch at the start of the year has brought record levels of engagement, higher attendances, fundraising opportunities, and competitive success.

In the British Universities and Colleges Sport leagues (BUCS), both the Men’s and Women’s 1st teams had a hugely successful year. The Men's first team got all the way to the semi-finals of the National Championships, and the Women's team are preparing to make the trip to Loughborough for BUCS Big Wednesday on 19 March 2025 for the National Vase final.

To get a taste of what the season has had in store for the Hockey club, students Iwan Cromack and Amelia Lewis created the following video:

For much of the year, Wednesday nights under the lights of the hockey pitch have been the place to be for those looking to watch or compete at the highest level in the BUCS programme. The season has also seen multiple big upsets and some of the highest-class performances in recent hockey history at NTU.

This was no more prevalent than at the BUCS Hockey showcase event this season, in which the Men’s and Women’s first teams went head-to-head with Durham in the BUCS Premier National League. This headliner event amassed over 400 in-person spectators in the stands at NTU’s brand new state-of-the-art hockey facility, accompanied by live music and entertainment throughout the evening. The live stream of the event, hosted by talented students at TrentTV, amassed over 5,000 views in total – highlighting the huge opportunities that the new developments have brought.

Alongside broadening the horizons for the club itself, the event helped the club’s fundraising efforts for Movember UK in support of men’s mental health and prostate cancer. As part of their Movember Campaign, NTU Men’s Hockey collaborated with TrentTV to create a series of short videos and multiple live streams as both the Men’s and Women’s clubs raised over £3,000 combined – which was a huge part in NTU Movember smashing their £20,000 goal.

When asked about the season so far, Head of Hockey at NTU, Jack Rhodes, said:

Congratulations to all involved on this stand-out season so far, you can be proud of what you have achieved.
