Another stand out moment was having the chance to work with a real-life client to assess their workplace needs and offer recommendations for improving their workforce. It was a great opportunity to apply what we’d learned in a practical setting.

More about Alice

Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree?

"After completing my undergraduate degree in Psychology with Sociology, I figured my main interests were based around understanding human behaviour in the working world – especially since work plays such a huge role in our everyday lives. After doing a bit of research, I wanted to take the first step in developing a career in occupational psychology. Doing a postgraduate degree felt like the right move to deepen my knowledge and gain the expertise needed to progress in the field."

Why did you choose your course at NTU?

"I completed my undergraduate degree at NTU and had a fantastic three years there. So, when I discovered they offered a masters in the area I was interested in, it was an easy decision. I already knew the quality of teaching and the supportive environment, so applying felt like a natural next step."

What’s your experience been like of your course? Can you pick out any highlights?

"The people – both my course mates and lecturers have been brilliant. My course mates quickly become close friends, and given how intense the course can be, having that support network made a huge difference.

Another stand out moment was having the chance to work with a real-life client to assess their workplace needs and offer recommendations for improving their workforce. It was a great opportunity to apply what we’d learned in a practical setting. Working in teams, we researched, explored different approaches, and had discussions around ideas that could genuinely make a difference. It felt extremely rewarding when we presented our ideas to the client in-person."

Were you involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that supplemented your studies?

"I was part of the Women’s Football team throughout my four years at Trent, and it was a huge part of my university experience. It gave me a great outlet away from my studies and helped me stay balanced. I also joined the play-for-fun table tennis sessions during my master’s – my only regret is not getting involved sooner!"

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"To me, Social Sciences are about making a real difference in people’s lives by analysing how societies function – whether that’s through reducing inequality, supporting mental health or informing policies. It also explores broader systems like culture and business strategy, and how they can evolve to better support employees. That’s exactly what draws me to Occupational Psychology."

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The support I have received at NTU has been fantastic. The staff have always been approachable and willing to help, whether it was answering questions or talking things through. A special mention to my dissertation supervisor, Jasmeet Singh - his guidance was invaluable and his quick responses over email really helped me overcome challenges during my research."

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Yes, NTU has a welcoming culture that makes it easy to connect with others. There are so many events and extra-curricular activities to get involved in, and if you throw yourself into it, you’ll find your people in no time."

What’s next for you after NTU?

"Right now, I am working in Occupational Health as a case manager. It’s been a steep learning curve, but a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Longer term, I would love to progress into a role that focuses more on organisational culture and leadership development."

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"Even after graduating, NTU continues to support me. I still receive employability emails with resources to help improve my CV, write stronger cover letters, and sharpen my interview skills. It’s great to know that support doesn’t stop when the course ends."
