Welcome to the Nottingham Institute of Humanities, Arts, Society and Political Studies
The Nottingham Institute of Humanities, Arts, Society and Political Studies brings together leading expertise across Creative Writing, English Literature, History, International Relations, Memory Studies, Museum and Heritage Studies, Philosophy, Politics and Sociology. These disciplines investigate the ideas, narratives, power structures and lived experiences that shape societies and cultures across time and place. Our academic community delivers outstanding teaching informed by ambitious, internationally recognised research that engages directly with major cultural, social and political challenges.
Our research environment is outward‑facing, collaborative and impactful. Scholars contribute to the University’s REF 2029 submissions across C20: Social Work and Social Policy, D27: English Language and Literature and D28: History. Across these units, our researchers produce work that influences public debate, informs policy, enriches cultural understanding and drives innovation in heritage, civic engagement and creative practice. Students benefit from this research culture through practice‑based learning, collaborative projects and partnerships with civic, cultural and professional organisations.
The Institute cultivates a dynamic, future‑focused environment where research, teaching and public engagement continually evolve. We support students and researchers who are ready to contribute insight, imagination and leadership to the cultural, social and political challenges of the future.
