Introduction:
Digital marketing is one of the fastest growing, most dynamic areas of the marketing industry. This constantly evolving field continually pioneers new technology, channels and pushes the boundaries of marketing practice. It's helping to redefine the nature of customer relationships, along with the increased use of global marketing strategies, more sophisticated branding techniques, integrated marketing communications and e-commerce.
Created in close collaboration with senior digital marketers and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), our MSc Digital Marketing degree will expose you to the very latest thinking, tools and techniques in digital and social media marketing.
You will be exposed to a broader view of marketing, the growing significance of digital marketing and the impact these activities have on people, organisations and societies. In your third semester, you’ll choose an experiential project. With the opportunity to use your skills in a real-world setting, you can choose from completing a consultancy experience project, or a business research project.

What you’ll study
At NBS you can create a personalised learning experience, giving you a unique Masters degree that equips you with the skills you'll need, for the career you want. Each of the modules will be delivered over a four week period, with teaching delivered in three weeks and the fourth week left clear for assessment work. This enables you to focus on one subject at a time, whilst allowing time for preparation and assessment work.
Residential trip
At the beginning of your course you will attend a residential trip with your new course mates and course team. This is a perfect introduction to your course and a great opportunity to get to know who you will be spending the next year studying with. The trip involves interactive ice-breaker sessions and team building activities.

Semester one
Principles of Marketing (20 credits)
This module will help articulate a critical understanding of the contemporary issues, theories and conceptual frameworks used to explain and guide conventional marketing activities in organisations nationally and internationally. You will be provided with a fundamental understanding of the basic tools and concepts of marketing. More specifically, you will be introduced to the core marketing functions and develop an understanding of the key concepts, frameworks and models encountered in marketing, with a focus on digital marketing.
Understanding The Customer Experience (20 credits)
This module will introduce you to the field of consumer behaviour throughout all stages of consumption, in the context of a range of micro- and macro-environmental issues. You will explore the social and group influences that impact consumer purchase decisions and the importance of customer satisfaction, brand loyalty and value to organisational performance. You will develop a critical understanding of customer behaviour models applied to contemporary consumer practices, a comprehensive appreciation of the digital customer journey, focused on digital channels, product, brand, promotion, and how organisations use this insight to inform decision making in marketing.
Strategic Global Marketing (20 credits)
On this module you will cover the key concepts, frameworks and models encountered in the strategic marketing process. You will develop an understanding of the foundations of strategy and strategic marketing, how traditional and contemporary marketing planning tools and approaches are applied in a variety of business contexts, and the impact the future global environment will have on planning. On completion of the module you will be able to confidently analyse the strategic position of an organisation by applying relevant theories, and demonstrate how to apply general strategic digital marketing in different organisational contexts.
Semester two
Your modules in Semester Two will benefit from expert external practitioners and industry partners through workshops and guest lectures.
Digital Marketing Operations (20 credits)
This module will provide both the theoretical background of digital marketing and practical applications of it, in the context of today's fast-changing digital landscape. You will gain a deeper understanding of digital disruption in marketing and how the pace of technology development is influencing business performance. Through examining digital strategy and tactics you will develop the ability to evaluate organisations' performance, assess how contemporary digital marketing practices can support business objectives and identify relevant strategy and objectives to implement on digital platforms.
Dynamic Digital Marketing (20 credits)
This module will develop your understanding of digital marketing and the underlying theories and concepts of digital marketing in communications strategies and plans. You will gain an appreciation of digital technologies and their impact on marketing practice and assess how contemporary practices are applied in different organisations and sectors to achieve objectives. You will examine areas including digital campaigns and planning frameworks, social media, digital community engagement, search engine optimisation (SEO) and optimising paid, owned and earned media.
Contemporary Perspectives in Customer Engagement (20 credits)
During this module, you will examine the core theories relating to customer engagement and apply these in a range of differing marketing contexts. You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary debates related to the philosophy and practice of marketing.
Semester three
In your final Semester you'll take on a experiential project, giving you a fantastic opportunity to use the theories and knowledge you've gained to produce a challenging, meaningful piece of work. Projects include:
Consultancy Experience Project (40 credits)
Working as part of a team, you'll undertake focused research, developing your professional skills, managing a complex project and delivering results in a real business situation. You'll present your findings to the client and learn valuable project management tools and concepts.
Business Research Project (40 credits)
This project is a more traditional piece of independent research, creating an academic research paper, presentation and methodological reflection. Because we believe experiential learning is so important, this project is only available to students with significant prior work experience or a desire to progress to a PhD.

Professional Practice (10 credits)
The purpose of the module is to increase your understanding of your own personal and professional development needs to enhance your business acumen and improve your employability. The module utilises a series of taught sessions to help you explore the human side of enterprise and deploys a series of diagnostics tests to help you evaluate yourself and develop an individual action plan. It will combine teaching with individual and group mentoring to help you execute your plan. The module also promotes engagement with internal and external workshops, lectures, experiential learning opportunities and extra-curricular events to help you expand your knowledge and skills, whilst challenging your attitudes and behaviours. You will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of continuous professional development from the perspective of relevant professional bodies.
Customer Insight through Marketing Research (10 credits)
The aim of this module is to develop your skills as an effective decision maker - organisations require insight to make effective decisions and effective marketing research has been an integral part of how decision makers in organisations understand consumers and market dynamics; and as an effective academic - philosophical debates and methodological issues will be explored as a foundation to understanding marketing research.
Professional development
Beyond your core curriculum and comprehensive career support, you'll have access to a vibrant CPD programme. This includes your Personal Development Week, Global Responsibility Week, and events and workshops including our Business Leaders’ Lecture Series. You'll also have the chance to participate in national and international business challenges, industry talks, field trips, and company visits. We encourage you to get involved in sports, clubs, societies, volunteering, and apply for roles like course rep or student ambassador. These opportunities are designed to enhance your experience, help you thrive in the job market, and support your personal growth.
Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)
The suite of MScs in Marketing have been mapped to the CIM curriculum which is a reflection of course currency and relevance to the marketing profession. The fact that the fundamentals of marketing are reinforced in the course means that you will also be awarded a Level 4 Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) following the successful completion of an assessment. You will also have exemptions from the Level 6 Diploma in Professional Digital Marketing. The CIM is an industry-recognised, professional body that employers know about. Holding either or both qualifications will allow graduates of the MSc Digital Marketing to stand out in a competitive job market.
So, you won’t just be studying for an MSc Digital Marketing but a CIM Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing as well. As a dual award, the MSc Digital Marketing represents excellent added value.
As a student on this course you will also be able to access free membership to the CIM. Membership gives you access to a range of benefits including CPD opportunities, webinars, networking events and online journals to name a few.
You’ll also be given the opportunity to attend the Google workshops which will be run by Google Partners to gain a professional accreditation that Google offers to individuals who demonstrate proficiency in basic and advanced aspects of AdWords.
Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience (2 year course only)
This module aims to develop your understanding of the business and commercial environment. You will apply relevant prior knowledge and skills in the business environment increasing your commercial awareness. On completion of the module, you will have developed a range of skills and have a practical insight into the world of work and possible career opportunities.
Please note that placements are only available for students beginning their studies in September and is not available for students starting in January.
If you opt for the two year route you can add a year’s work placement onto your course. It’s a great way to put your learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to help boost your career prospects once graduating.
Your placement year will last up to 48 weeks (minimum 36 weeks). If you are unable to take a full year's placement, but have completed the minimum 36 weeks you can qualify for a Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience. If you undertake a placement, you must take up the Business Research Project in Semester Three.
Please note that placements are not guaranteed and you will need to work hard in securing one during your first semester. How you’re taught
Teaching and Learning
Nottingham Business School adopts a distinctive approach to the design of student learning opportunities. Your learning is structured around theory, practice, experience & observation, and reflection & improvement. At each level (course, module and session), you will study different theories, concepts and approaches and be given opportunities to apply these in a range of practical settings. The aim is to enhance your understanding through the direct experience of business, where you will have opportunities to observe business practices and behaviours (including your own) and analyse these using theoretical knowledge. It is our intention that by reflecting on these experiences, you will be able to use these theories to guide your actions and decisions in a business context or even consider how a theory itself might be improved. In this way, we aim to enhance the quality of your learning.
Marketing Simulation
As part of your Principles of Marketing module you will take part in a simulation exercise which will see you make marketing decisions for company in the jeans industry, applying your skills within a dynamic competitive market place. In class you will compete in teams and be able to track the impact of your decisions on the company's performance. Through the simulation you'll be able to connect essential marketing concepts to marketing practice and in doing so develop relevant professional marketing skills.
Academic Mentors
Every postgraduate student will be allocated an Academic Mentor at the beginning of the academic year and you will meet with them regularly throughout the year. Academic Mentors help you make the most of your time at NTU. They will support you in developing and enhancing the qualities and transferrable skills necessary for your studies, career progression, professional and personal development.
Assessments
A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research based projects.
The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.
In-sessional English language support
In-sessional English language classes are offered to international students at no extra cost. The classes aim to provide focused support in the skills you need in order to develop your English in your subject area.

NTU may admit a student with advanced standing beyond the beginning of a course, through an assessment of that student's prior learning, whether it is certificated or uncertificated. Our Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer Policy outlines the process and options available to these prospective students, such as recognising experiential learning or transferring to a similar course at another institution, otherwise known as credit transfer.

Library books
Most study modules will recommend one or more core text books, which most students choose to purchase. Book costs vary and further information is available in the University’s bookshop. Our libraries provide a good supply of essential text books, journals and materials (many of which you can access online) – meaning you may not need to purchase as many books as you might think! There may also be a supply of second-hand books available for purchase from previous year students.
Field trips
All essential field trip costs will be included in your course fees. There may be the opportunity to take part in optional field trips, which do incur additional costs.
Placement
Whilst on placement students will be expected to pay for accommodation, travel and living costs.
Print and copy costs
The University allocates an annual printing and copying allowance of £20 depending on the course you are studying. - Register as a new applicant and create an account in the Applicant Portal - don't worry you won't need to complete your application at once, you can come back to it so keep your details safe.
- Fill out and submit your application - make sure to check all the information such as entry requirements before submitting.
- Track the progress of your application – you can do this by logging into the Application Portal.
- Check your offer – As long as you’ve provided all the information we need, we’ll try and make a decision on your application within five to ten working days. However, this can take longer and you should allow at least three weeks for a decision.
- Accept your offer within four weeks - Remember that competition for places is high, and if you don’t accept your offer within four weeks it may lapse. After eight weeks it will be automatically withdrawn.
- Meet the conditions of your offer (if you have any) - Upload all the documents required to meet the conditions of your offer using the My Documents section of the Applicant Portal.
