How the course works
The Help to Grow: Management Course is designed to fit around your work commitments and give you practical, actionable insights from day one.
You’ll benefit from a blended learning experience that includes:
- Eight live, online sessions (2 hours each), led by experts from Nottingham Business School
- Four in-person workshops, designed around interactive case studies and peer discussion
- One-to-one mentoring, helping you apply what you learn to your own business challenges
- Peer networking, where you’ll share ideas and experiences with other SME leaders
- Access to our national alumni network, with events featuring inspirational speakers and ongoing opportunities to connect
What you'll study
Explore how innovation and strategic thinking can help your business stay competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing market. You'll review your current business model and identify opportunities to create more value for your customers and drive sustainable growth.
By the end of this module, you will:

- Understand how to use data analytics to support better decision-making.
- Be aware of common cybersecurity risks and how to protect your business.
- Recognise and address the practical challenges of adopting digital solutions.
Learn how other businesses have successfully entered new markets — including overseas — by adapting their business models and strategies. This module offers practical insights into different market entry approaches and how international growth can spark further innovation.

Define what your business stands for — and why it matters. This module explores how a clear vision, purpose and brand identity can strengthen customer loyalty, shape company culture, and guide strategic decisions.

- Understand the strategic importance of vision, purpose, brand, and customer value proposition.
- Review and refine your current vision, mission, and values statements.
- Define the key elements of your brand and how they create value for customers.
- Recognise how a strong purpose and brand can improve employee engagement and internal culture.
Gain a clearer understanding of your customers and how to reach them effectively. This module helps you build a structured marketing strategy that aligns with your business goals and delivers a strong return on investment.

Build your confidence with the numbers that matter. This module helps you understand financial statements, cash flow forecasting, and growth funding — giving you the tools to make informed decisions, plan ahead, and access the right support when needed.
By the end of this module, you will:
- Use key financial data and metrics to monitor growth, productivity, and performance.
- Understand how to forecast cash flow and use it to manage uncertainty or recovery.
- Identify suitable options to finance business growth from internal and external sources.
- Know where to find trusted financial advice and support tailored to SMEs.
Learn from the journey of a successful business leader who has built a responsible, innovative, and resilient company. This case study explores the real-world strategies, networks, and decisions that enabled sustainable growth — and how you can apply similar approaches in your own business.

Is your business eligible?
To join the Help to Grow: Management Course, your business must meet the following criteria:
- Employ between 5 and 249 people
- Have been actively trading for at least one year
- Be based in the UK
Participants should:
- Be part of the senior leadership team (e.g. owner, director, or senior manager)
- Manage at least one direct report
- Have a strong interest in developing leadership skills and growing the business - no formal qualifications are needed

Fees and funding
The Help to Grow: Management Course is 90% funded by the UK Government.
The cost to your business is just £750 per participant.
- A maximum of two participants per business can join the course.
- The fee includes all tuition, mentoring, resources, and access to the alumni network.
Bursary support
We understand that cost may still be a barrier for some. In certain cases, we can offer discretionary bursaries to help cover the course fee.
- Bursaries are designed to support applicants who may struggle to pay the £750 fee
- They do not need to be repaid

Meet your expert instructors
The Help to Grow: Management Course is delivered by a team of specialists from Nottingham Business School, combining academic insight with real-world business experience. Our experts bring deep knowledge from both industry and research to help you apply practical strategies that drive growth.
Paul Wreaves
Paul is an experienced business coach and has worked on the Government Growth Accelerator Project, and delivered business consultancy support through the NTU Future Factory programme. Paul is a member of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and is often asked to deliver external workshops and talks on business growth and planning.
Mark Smith
Mark is a Lecturer at Nottingham Business School specialising in brand strategy and customer experience. He is founder of The Brand Strategy marketing agency, helping brands to deliver long-term sustainable profit and growth through strategic direction and full customer experience planning.
Suzanne Ross
Suzanne has experience of the public, private and third sectors across diverse organisations and is now part of the Executive Education and Corporate Relations team at Nottingham Business School. Her specialist areas include leadership behaviours, emotional intelligence and leading strategic change.
