Welcome to the Department of Journalism & Media
Our links with local and national television, newspapers, magazines, radio stations, media companies and voluntary organisations open up the classroom for real-world learning. Nationally we work with the BBC, Sky, ITN and Channel 5 News, and regionally with Sheffield Documentary Festival, Gem 106, Capital Radio East Midlands, Nottingham Post, Nottingham Media Festival, Broadway Media Centre and Nottingham Contemporary.
Our journalism, film and media courses are among the most highly-regarded in the UK, with journalism courses accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJCT) and Professional Publishers Association (PPA). We are ranked in the top 30 for Journalism (Guardian University Guide 2023).
Teaching is a collaboration of academics, media professionals, researchers, visiting experts and industry partners - all of whom enrich our curriculum across broadcasting, journalism, media, communications, film and cultural studies. Work placements, company projects and volunteering within our extensive UK network of partner organisations provide our students with a range of multimedia skills needed in today’s media industry.
Our internationally recognised research specialisms include Gender and Sexuality; Globalisation, Migration and Diaspora; Language, Power and Institution; Media and Film Cultures; and Philosophy, Culture, and Everyday Life organised in the Centre for the Study of Inequality, Culture and Difference.
