About this course

How did the universe begin? How will it end? What happened before the Big Bang? On this BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics course, you’ll investigate some of the biggest questions human beings have ever faced. You’ll dive into phenomena like black holes, galaxies, quasars and supernovas and seek to understand interrelated disciplines like cosmology, space science and particle physics.

You’ll get to grips with the latest astronomical and scientific technology as you search the skies from our own on-campus observatory, equipped with optical and solar telescopes, and recognised by the International Astronomical Union. Alongside this, you’ll immerse yourself in core concepts of physics, from thermodynamics and quantum mechanics to the laws of motion and energy, giving you the combination of knowledge and hands-on experience you need to succeed.

You will do all this under the guidance of our expert physics teaching team, who have a huge range of research experience in areas including superhydrophobic surfaces, Medical Resonance Imaging, sustainability, and space weather.

Studying astrophysics at university also allows you to develop key skills in areas that are highly in demand for modern employers. Hands-on physics

At NTU, we are all about hands-on learning and sharing our passion for our subjects. See our Physics students who organised an outreach event at Nottingham Castle and shared the wonders of physics with the public.
 

How you're taught

You’ll be learning from experts on this astrophysics degree. The majority of our teaching team are highly active in research, specialising in areas including imaging and sensing, geomagnetic activity, heritage and sustainability and space debris. Many of them also have industrial experience across the sector, and this fusion of knowledge, insight and experience feeds directly into all our physics degrees.

You’ll learn through a mix of:

  • lectures that explore the core concepts of physics – from the classical theories to the latest scientific breakthroughs
  • smaller group seminars and workshop sessions that are perfect for exploring big ideas, learning key skills, and developing collaborative working practices
  • practical sessions with our range of industry-standard facilities including CT and MRI scanners, microscopes, and our incredible on-campus observatory
  • your own independent reading and research
  • an optional year-long placement in industry taken between your second and third years of study
  • various fieldtrips, typically including an excursion to Alton Towers theme park to investigate classical mechanics in action, and a trip to Rolls Royce facilities in Derby as part of a first-year programming work-like assignment

How you're assessed

Assessment methods for our physics with astrophysics degree are broad and diverse, and chosen to support your learning journey. Typically this means a combination of problem-based assignments, work-like experiences, presentations, project work and case files, skills portfolios, and examinations.

You’ll get regular feedback throughout the course to help you, usually through in-class or laboratory discussion with our teaching team, and written feedback on submitted work.

Contact hours

NTU Physics modules have around 40 hours of contact time – time spent with a tutor – and expect an additional 80 or so hours of independent study time outside of the classroom. Some modules, such as those with substantial laboratory work in our cutting-edge facilities, will have slightly more contact hours completing experiments and investigations with supervision.

Additional costs

Your course fees cover the cost of studies and include loads of great benefits, such as the use of our library, support from our expert Employability team and free use of the IT equipment across our campuses. There are just a few additional things you may need to budget for:

Physics textbooks and library books

Usually modules will recommend one or more core textbooks, which most students choose to purchase. Book costs vary and further information is available in the University’s bookshop. If you’re a Year 1 or 2 Physics student, you’ll get free access to Pearson’s Mastering Physics platform. This includes your core course eText, University Physics with Modern Physics, at no extra cost.

Our libraries also provide a good supply of essential textbooks, journals and materials (many of which you can access online) - meaning you may not need to purchase as many books as you might think! There may also be a supply of second-hand books available for purchase from previous year students.

Printing and photocopying costs

The University allocates an annual printing and copying allowance of £20 depending on the course you are studying. For more details about costs for additional print and copying required over and above the annual allowance please see the printing and photocopying information on the Library website.

Scientific Calculator

You will require a scientific calculator for use in examinations (e.g. any A-level approved calculator such as Casio 83 or 85 series, approximately £15).

Placements

If you're undertaking a placement year, you'll need to budget for accommodation and any travel costs you may incur whilst on placement. Many of our placement students do earn a salary whilst on placement which can help to cover these living costs.

Field trips

All essential field trip costs will be included in your course fees. There may be the opportunity to take part in optional field trips, which do incur additional costs.

Year abroad

If you choose to study abroad for a year, you may need to consider additional costs such as visas, vaccinations, accommodation and travel expenses.

You’ll mainly be studying in the Erasmus Darwin building with access to facilities including our purpose-built, on-campus astronomical observatory recognised by the International Astronomical Union,  MRI scanner, and microscopy suites in our Medical Technologies Innovation Facility.

Our self-contained, community-focused Clifton Campus has been designed to keep you busy between lectures. Catch-up with your course mates in the Pavilion’s barista café and Refectory; brainstorm group presentations in chic and stylish study spaces; enjoy some proper R&R in The Point, home of our Students’ Union.
