Book of condolences - Liza Pybus
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our colleague Liza Pybus, Deputy Head of Postgraduate Programmes in NBS at NTU for 30 years.
The University understands how difficult it can be when we lose someone close to us. We have opened up this online book of condolence to bring together tributes for Liza.
If you would like to offer your condolences or pay tribute you are invited to leave a message on this page.

Liza will be known to a great many colleagues as she worked at the University for over 30 years. She was the Deputy Head of Postgraduate Programmes, an invaluable member of the Management department and a former Programme Leader for the Masters in Management (MiM) programme. Her loss will be felt by many, but her legacy of supporting students, colleagues and delivering outstanding teaching and learning will live on. Liza exemplified the values of NTU.
Liza was a fantastic colleague, friend and supporter to many colleagues in NBS and in particular all the Postgraduate Course Leaders, subject administrators and teaching teams that she has worked with over the years in her multiple roles. Liza was passionate about her work at NBS supporting students, to give their best and be their best. She championed students, supported and nurtured colleagues and was a friend to many across the Business School and the wider University.
Liza will be so very missed and her loss leaves a void in NBS that can't be replaced – it is impossible to imagine NBS without Liza.
It is a great shock to hear that Liza is no more. I was just about to contact her for reference purposes because she was my great mentor when I was doing my MSc in Management and International Business 2011 cohort. So sad to hear of her demise.

Liza was my academic mentor during my Masters degree.
She played a tremendous role in the personal and professional development of myself and my classmates this past academic year, and really embodied what the ideal teacher should be which is guiding students by instilling knowledge and ethics.
Liza was also integral in ensuring the masters students could have a memorable experience during the course through organizing various field trips, social events and team building events which helped in bringing the students together.
Her enthusiasm and kindness really stood out, and all of us who studied at the Nottingham Business School will really cherish the positive memories.
May she Rest in Peace.

Liza was an inaugural Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Management Education, a position she held for 22 years. As Editor I often asked Liza for her help and guidance and she was always too willing and able to assist. Liza was a good academic citizen, giving her time and expertise whenever requested. I remain grateful for her advice and inputs and I am deeply saddened to hear of her loss. Liza will be greatly missed by many in the academic community.

In losing Liza the world has lost a diamond , the purest diamond there ever was. A person who so humbly, so caringly and selflessly touched so many hearts in different ways and made such an impact on so many lives. Her imprint on this world can never be erased. The most dedicated person to changing people's lives and the power of education that I have ever known. A person who will never get to know and enjoy the freedom of her own retirement. The kindest, calmest, fairest and most silently strong and humble person I've ever met. It seems so incredibly unfair that you have been taken away from Steve and your sons, your beautiful grandchildren, your family and your closest friends and my thoughts and prayers go out to those people. The ripple of your loss is very wide reaching. To the wonderful, sparkly, vibrant, mischievous and adventurous woman, with the best twinkle in her eye! who cared so much, that was Liza Pybus, you made such an impact on all of our lives, extended so much kindness and will be dearly missed x x x 😭😭😭😭😭

I’m in utter shock to hear of my favorite lady loss. This heavenly lady cannot be called to Him by God. I will always remember you with your warm welcome in my first day in NBS, I will still recall the useful Teachings and directions given by you. With his insight and experience, he always made the classroom brighter. That’s probably going to be gravely missed. Heartiest sorrow for the loss of a beloved mentor. I hope he’s now in the right spot, and he’s watching us. His presence is going to be missed by everyone. I never felt that I’d write this. May her soul rest in peace.

I remember when the going used to get tough and the pressure mounted, she always had a kind word for us and with her signature smile, she would offer words of comfort and motivate, encourage and support her students. She was a motherly figure and always ready to brighten up our days with her broad and affectionate smile and kind demeanour. May God bless your soul and elevate your ranks in Jannat. This is such heartbreaking news. Liza was the warmest, and most humble person you could ever know.
I met her whilst performing Women of Troy at the Lace Market Theatre in 2013. She was so much fun and a very talented actor too.
We regularly bumped into each other at NTU and would have quick mini catch-ups. I will miss looking out for her in a crowded room and being drawn to her warm inviting smile.
Deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Hey Liza. I was at Thornbridge yesterday, so thought I would tell you how it went. I know how much you loved Thornbridge and how much we enjoyed bike riding together with the students. I was mostly faster than you. But you just laughed because you know me so well. Yesterday was a beautiful day. The sun was shining- so you were definitely there with us. We had some fun! Same food... you know the deal. The spuds were the size of small bricks. I took an additional brownie from Sally :) like usual. I would have text you, but know that reception is not always great where you are. So I sent a prayer instead. I know you will have received that just fine. I was in the Lakes two weeks ago- past Brathay and thought of you- and our Dragon boat...I think we won. But I could be making that up.... You must know, that while I won't be texting you anymore, or buying you Christmas trees...or asking to move in...I will always be thinking of you. Love is eternal. Claudia x

Liza was one of the best colleagues I ever had at Nottingham Trent. So full of energy, optimism, ability to envisage projects and get things done. She was a great bringer together of people, always supportive, always kind, always encouraging you to better things. It was these qualities that made her such a wonderful teacher. Her students and their experience were always uppermost in her mind.
She had qualities beyond her life at Nottingham Trent. She was notably, amongst many other activities she was involved in, an accomplished performer in drama productions, adding vigour, drive and artful characterisation - and often a great deal of humour - to the ensembles she worked with.
Such a wonderful person, such a great loss.

Liza was such an incredible person. Her friendly and caring nature, that ever-present smile, and her willingness to lend a hand... Even though I only had the chance to get to know her during our American trip, I felt a genuine connection.
Liza lived a beautiful life, filled with kindness and warmth.
Liza forever lives in my heart.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Liza was always smiling, energetic and bubbly. I have fond memories of working together from the induction field trip in Derbyshire, getting lost as the student attempted to map read, watching Liza enthusiastically and repeatedly taking the opportunity to go down the zip wire while two teams of students competed to build bridges on the water below, to her working the room as the students celebrated at their end of year party. It was a privilege to work with Liza and she will be greatly missed.

I too was on that corridor in Chaucer when Liza arrived at NBS. Like many others, we became friends quickly. So many memories to cherish. I will miss you very much but I am priviliged to been part of your world. Love H x

I met Liza in her first week at NTU. She was based in an office at the end of my corridor in Chaucer and made it her business to meet everyone she could, as soon as possible. My memories of her, over so many years, are varied but tend to have one factor in common - tremendous energy, and fearlessness. If a group of us were walking uphill, she would be striding out in front. She laughed whole-heartedly, not with some feeble snigger. In Baku she went out for coffee with a local female colleague - and no accompanying male. In - Athens? she faced down an earthquake, and won. She was friendly and helpful to everyone. The only time I ever saw her really angry was one time when she told me about her cat complaining to her - s/he was "shouting at me! Really shouting!". Note to self - don't shout at Liza.
Liza was unusual, perhaps unique, in her absolute focus on the student experience. She worked massively hard to do her best. At the same time, she somehow found time for other activities, especially acting. If she didn't have a role in the Lace Market Theatre's current production - well, then she would man the ticket office. Rest In Peace, Liza. You really deserve it.

Liz enabled me to survive the switch to online teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic. She shared her experience of running the Masters Consultancy projects online in March of 2020 with me and other colleagues and in doing so provided me with the clarity & structure I needed to see a way forward to run online service-learning projects in autumn 2020. I counted Liza as a friend first and colleague second, working with her for seven years as my course leader, for the January-start masters in management, and in her role as deputy head of postgraduate programmes.
On a personal level, I always felt that Liza was on my side, which was a mistake really, because she was on everyone’s side, but never in a mean-spirited way, as she didn’t play people off against one another. She was fair and friendly in her dealings with everyone and an expert problem-solver, who had a way of negotiating her way through stuff which helped everyone involved. Liza was – of course – great with everybody: students, staff and all of the other stakeholders (including the sometimes quite tricky external examiners.)
When I worked closely with her, Liza had enormous patience and never made me feel lacking or stupid, even in those early days, when I was new to working in higher education and hadn’t a clue what I was doing. I soon realised that this was because she was a great educator, with a special gift: an inciteful way of seeing the bigger picture, while acknowledging the small-seeming personal consequences on her co-workers. For instance, when I went to her with an issue I’d almost lost sleep over, she worked out what we needed to do calmly and methodically, seeing past the brick wall presenting itself to me, and sorting the problem out within seconds.
Liza made a big point of celebrating everyone’s success too. So, when it was my turn for a promotion, I received her best wishes, a congratulations card and lunch, although I know I wasn’t picked out for special treatment here as the recipient of Liza’s generosity. In my experience, Liza was kind and generous to everyone who crossed her path.
Of course, that doesn’t even begin to explain our relationship, and I have lots of memories of her relaxing, dancing and laughing. Somewhere in the world, an ex-student has phone-footage of Liza and I, dancing around a Derbyshire pub, fuelled by prosecco and dressed for warmth not style, in walking boots and anoraks. She joked that the student was perhaps poised and ready for blackmail.
I know that this makes Liza sound unprofessional, which isn’t true either. She dealt with the everyday demands of a job, which took her way beyond those weekly contracted hours of work, expertly and with good humour. There are examples of this which are too numerous to list here, although those trips to the Peak District with the new MSc students stand out. Dealing with 50 disoriented newbies, who were usually jet-lagged, coping with the unfamiliar food, culture, and January weather patterns was never going to be an easy task, but Liza had a way of making it look so simple and straightforward.
I learnt a lot from both working and knowing Liza Pybus and will miss her constantly, more than words can describe.
You were an amazing person Liza, and I feel privileged to have been one of the lucky ones, who was taken under your wing and nurtured by you, professionally and personally

Liza has become a great personal friend since I joined NTU and I will miss her firstly on a very personal level as well as professionally. She was incredibly welcoming, superbly organised and hard working and totally committed to NTU and her students. Liza worked all hours ,way beyond the call of duty with trips away to the peak district in all weathers .Liza would climb, abseil and ride a bike with students ,socialise and take them to conferences or Alton towers! Her priority was always the satisfaction of students and being friendly and fun .
She has inspired 100's of post graduates many who have kept in touch over the years .
On top of this she could act and dance ,go to music gigs and walk with the best of them .Liza was a force of life which has tragically being cut short .We will miss you so much .

Liza and I have crossed paths in so many different contexts over the years. She was a tremendous asset to the university and we will miss her very much.

I was so sorry to hear about Liza's death. She was a lovely colleague to work with and had a great rapport with students. We will miss working with her to support the NTIC students this year. My condolences to her family and hope they have lots of wonderful memories of her to console them at this time.

This is such sad news, especially as we welcome new international students and you were always so dedicated to making them feel welcome and ready for their studies. Such a huge loss to NTU and your friends at the Lace market theatre, we are all devastated. May your kindness and passion live on in our memories. My most sincere condolences to your family and close friends.
