Book of condolences - Pat Huddleston

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our colleague Pat Huddleston, Principal Lecturer and Honorary Fellow at NTU.

The University understands how difficult it can be when we lose someone close to us. We have opened up this online book of condolence to bring together tributes for Pat.

If you would like to offer your condolences or pay tribute you are invited to leave a message on this page.

Pat joined NTU as lecturer in 1965 after studying for his PhD at King’s College, Newcastle, then part of Durham University. He was a passionate teacher and researcher in organic chemistry, specialising in thiophene chemistry.

After retiring from the role of Principal Lecturer in the early 1990s, Pat continued to work for NTU as an Honorary Fellow to pursue new lines of research, spending many hours in the lab. Even in the last year he was collaborating with two international students on making new molecules.

Pat’s loss will be felt by many.

“Pat was an excellent synthetic organic chemist and a thorough gentleman” – Professor Gerry Pattenden, Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

“We agree wholeheartedly and will miss his kindness, good humour and dedication to his subject. He was an inspiration to us all.” – Pat’s friends and colleagues.

You can also pay tribute by donating to the two charities that Pat supported – Action Aid and the Woodland Trust.

We never worked together, but he was a regular face around SST. A lovely person.

Pat was a fantastic chemist, but more importantly a great person. Always friendly, smiling and helpful. He will be greatly missed.
